Viridor refuse to attend residents’ incinerator public meeting

The public meeting about Viridor’s plans to build a large incinerator just south of Lee Mill is only a week away. This week, the company told the local media that they are not going to attend the public meeting because it is at a weekend. You can read the Viridor’s comments on the Herald’s website.

I’m really disappointed by this. Firstly, because the company’s PR agency told us that they were going to attend only to then turn around and say they’re not. Secondly, because if they really want to listen to local people then they need to make themselves available when local people are available – this means weekends.

This week I’ll be working with the organisers of the residents’ campaign in order to try and get Viridor to attend to listen to local people. You cannot say you will listen to local people on one hand and then refuse to turn up to public meetings on the other.

Can you help spread the word about the public meeting? We need as many people there as possible to highlight the strength of opinion of local people. If Viridor refuse to attend – how will they be able to answer people’s questions and listen to their concerns?

My message to Viridor is simple: Please come to the public meeting and listen to local people’s concerns – you never know you might be able to win them over!

Remember: There’s a Facebook group for the incinerator campaign – have you joined it yet?
