In a little under three weeks there will be a by-election in the Filham ward of Ivybridge. Labour has selected Helen Eassom as our candidate. Helen grew up in Ivybridge, attending the local school, and will be known to many people as one of Ivybridge Labour’s campaign team. She’s a real fighter and will be asking voters to support her so she can oppose the incinerator on the council on behalf of residents.
This ward is represented by two councillors at District level – the other sitting councillor is a person you may be familiar with - the dangerously conflicted Cllr Roger Croad – the Tory in charge of searching for a site for the incinerator that is looking at the site down the road from Ivybridge.
This is traditionally a Conservative ward, but just this time, let’s not elect a Tory.
The local Tories have known about the incinerator for years and did nothing to tell local people. It was only when I began campaigning against it that they started paying attention. On Thursday 18 February, instead of electing another Tory, why not mix it up a bit and elect Helen to oppose the incinerator and ensure the Tories are doing their jobs properly.
Helen would make a brilliant councillor. Politics needs more active young women like Helen in it and I’m very pleased to support her. We have a real chance to shake things up in Ivybridge with this by-election. It won’t threaten the Tories’ hold on the local councils but it might just make them listen to local people some more if we elect someone who isn’t just another Tory. So, my request to you if you’re a Tory voter in Filham, is just this once, use your vote for Labour to show your anger at how the Tories have handled the incinerator issue – and let’s shake our local democracy up a bit.
