I’m just back from a freezing cold but brilliant campaign afternoon in Ivybridge. We had 20 people give up their afternoon to come and help us in the Filham by-election today. We were delivering our latest leaflet focussing on the Tories poor record in representing local people on the incinerator issue. Every home in the ward received a leaflet from us today – top work everyone – well done.

We also made over 100 contacts with residents and the response was very good indeed. People know that their local Tory Councillor is doing nothing to publicly oppose the incinerator and they know their Tory councillor is the man in charge of the search for an incinerator behind the scenes.
People are also starting to wise up to the fact that it was until June the Liberal Democrats who were in charge of the incinerator search in Devon – something that you won’t see on their Focus leaflets I wager. You will, however, see them claiming they were opposing the incinerator in March last year (yes, that’s when they were in power – so they were both supporting an incinerator and opposing it at the same time – brilliant).
What was really encouraging for me today was not only that we could get 20 people to help on such a cold afternoon but that people were genuinely warmed to see someone new, a fresh face in Ivybridge politics. On Thursday there are three candidates on the ballot paper – and Labour’s candidate is the only person who isn’t a middle-aged man with a beard. That should mean something to a town looking towards the future.
If you can help make some calls to voters, deliver a few leaflets or spare a few pounds to help the campaign before Thursday please get in touch. This by-election isn’t in the bag for the Tories – let’s mix things up and cause an upset.
