Last Thursday voters in Ivybridge went to the polls to elect their new district councillor. The by-election didn’t go exactly to plan but it did produce a very interesting result. We focused our campaign on the Tories and their poor record on the incinerator. The campaign worked and the Tory vote was put under pressure – the only problem was that the protest vote turned to the Lib Dems who took the seat.
Of course, the incinerator was originally a Liberal Democrat policy and was until June last year. Our job now is to make sure the new Lib Dem councillor and the other Tories are properly fighting the incinerator as Labour is.
The by-election was a distraction from the real issue though – opposing the incinerator. Viridor have now submitted their planning application and we’ve got to stop it. Cllr Roger Croad’s conflict of interest has embarrassed his own party but he has done little to stop the incinerator. We need to now forget about Cllr Roger Croad and his conflict for the next few weeks and focus on getting as many people as possible to send in objections to Devon County Council.
I’ve been spending tonight preparing a leaflet for the cross-party group opposing the incinerator. We’ll hopefully have thousands of them for delivery soon. Watch this space.
