The Tory Government has snuck out news that HMS Ocean is to be scrapped in 2019 and not replaced. This news was hidden in a document pile released by the Ministry of Defence just before the election.
HMS Ocean's future in doubt
Devonport deserves better than having an announcement about the Royal Navy's flagship and a Devonport-based warship being snuck out without scrutiny or a proper announcement. There are a lot of Plymouth residents who serve on HMS Ocean and they'll want to know what is happening to the warship.
Sneaking out an announcement that the warship is going to be scrapped is a shoddy way of running the nation's defence and Devonport deserves better.
HMS Ocean and HMS Bulwark
For the last week the Tories have been attacking Labour's defence policy on spurious and shameful grounds while at the same time knowing they're planning on scrapping the Royal Navy's largest warship but keeping the news hidden from the public. With the next Defence Review only a matter of months away it would have surely made sense to review HMS Ocean's lifespan as part of a wide review about what capabilities the Royal Navy should have.
Why won't the Tories debate defence?
Regular readers of my tweets will know that I have been challenging Oliver Colvile, the Tory MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, for many months to a head to head debate about issues affecting Devonport. He has yet to reply to my three challenges about this. I've spoken to him in person and he said he'd get round to replying "shortly".
News that the Tories plan to scrap HMS Ocean in 2019 needs to have proper scrutiny. I want a proper debate about defence and issues affecting Devonport - so why won't Oliver Colvile and the Tories agree to debate me? What are they scared of?
