As a new Member of Parliament, I am constantly meeting lots of campaign groups. Recently I attended a session with the team from Mencap for Learning Disability week 19-25 June.
I have personal experience in my own family with learning disabilities. A lot of progress has been made but more needs to be done – especially to help people into meaningful employment.
Having a job means many things, it allows you to build confidence and make a meaningful contribution to society. I am a huge fan of the work Mencap is doing nationally and that Pluss is doing in Plymouth.
There are many barriers people with learning disabilities face when they are trying to find work. Helping to provide them with the support they need to find a job makes a huge difference to their lives and to our wider society.
I also believe that businesses have a responsibility to hire staff with learning disabilities. This should not be seen as CSR, it is good for business - helping employ loyal, talented people who ready to contribute to success for the business.
