Luke tells Jeremy Vine MPs have more to worry about than Big Ben's bongs

This week there’s been a lot of coverage online and in the newspapers that the bongs of Big Ben have been silenced for a four-year restoration period.  Yesterday Luke went on BBC Radio 2 with Jeremy Vine and later BBC Radio Devon Drive Time to say there are more important issues for MPs to be debating than #BigBen’s bong.

Luke was joined on the Jeremy Vine show by Nigel Evans, Conservative MP for the Ribble Valley who has called for government to think again about the bong's suspension. Luke thinks instead of all this fuss, the public want their MPs to be focusing on the real issues that matter in their day to day lives.

Luke said:

“It’s important that the bells and clock tower work properly to preserve it for future generations. But what gets me annoyed, and I’ve only been an MP for two and half months, is that there are so many more things that we should be worrying about than Big Ben.

There are thousands of people in Plymouth and around the country that can’t afford to eat, but we’re talking about Big Ben. We’re not talking about issues I think most people want their MP’s to talk about which are the issues at hand – the NHS crisis, foodbanks, Brexit, what’s going on with Donald Trump in America. These are the issues I think the public want their MP focused on rather than what’s going on with a bell.”

Jeremy Vine also rightly mentioned it was a sign of Theresa May's crumbling premiership that she comes back from holiday and the first thing she talks about is a bell.
