I'm sorry if this picture offends anyone. It's a photo taken from the Independent this afternoon of a dead Syrian refugee child washed up on a Turkish beach after his family's failed attempt to flee to Europe across the Mediterranean escaping the Syrian civil war. It absolutely breaks my heart.
As does our Government's response to the refugee crisis. When our country's response to one of the greatest humanitarian crises of our lifetimes is to say "we are full" and that Britain will shut its doors, it deserves to haunt all of us for the rest of our lives if we do nothing about it.
Britain has always provided safe haven to those fleeing war, genocide and attack and rightly so. We cannot stand by while a humanitarian tragedy occurs on our doorstep. It diminishes our nation, belittles our values and does nothing to prevent the suffering and loss this picture so vividly highlights.
I have today written to the Prime Minister asking him to take action. Politicians frequently talk tough on immigration but this isn't about immigration - this is about standing up for a fairer world and doing the right thing. This young boy died and this image should haunt us all until we act.
If you believe strongly that Britain should take action please consider adding your name to this Parliamentary petition.
