Trans Day of Remembrance 2020
Trans Day of Remembrance 2020

On Trans Day of Remembrance 2020, Luke Pollard MP had this to say:

“Trans rights are human rights. Today is the Trans Day of Remembrance. It is the day we remember and honour the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of transphobic violence.

“It was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith, as a vigil to honor the remember Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

“By November this year, 350 transgender people – mostly trans women of colour – had been murdered worldwide. That’s up from 331 in all of 2019. These numbers are the highest since trans murders started being recorded in 2013.

“My thoughts are with those families around the world dealing with the loss of a loved one, a sibling, parent, partner or friend whose life was cut short simply for identifying as trans. To lose a life is tragic. To lose a life due to another’s prejudice and hatred is heartbreakingly cruel.

“Since I was elected in 2017 as Plymouth’s first out MP I have proudly stood up for trans rights. I stand proudly with the Trans community again today. This is not a “debate”, this is a fight for basic rights, equality and safety. I will do everything I can to push for trans equality and a society free from hatred and discrimination. Please take a moment today to remember those who are no longer with us because of hate and violence.”
