Local elections are taking place in Plymouth, and across the United Kingdom, on Thursday 6 May 2021. Voting in these is one of the best ways to engage with politics and have your say.
COVID-19 has confirmed just how important having a competent and moral City Council is. Local Councils work hard to, among other things, support the vulnerable, invest in and improve the city, help support local businesses and promote public health.
They have been short-changed and under-funded by the last ten years of austerity by the Tory government, and this is no truer than for Plymouth and the South West who routinely don’t get their fair share. For anyone who feels they want things done differently, voting is the most important way to get your voice out there and ensure a functioning democracy.
Voting in the middle of a pandemic is always going to look different. We saw how waiting for postal votes so affected the US presidential election, for example, and there will likely be social distancing, masks and potentially further restrictions.
The current situation is so uncertain and volatile, we don’t know where we as a country will be in a few months’ time, let alone us as individuals.
This is why it is so important to sign up for early voting. An Early Vote means you can vote by post from home. Registering for an Early Vote makes it easier for Labour to win future elections.
