Following calls from South West Water for families to use less water over the summer months, the Environment Agency has launched a campaign calling on the public to do their bit in helping to conserve water. The new campaign asks the public to become #WaterWarriors this summer by making the right choices when they use water for recreation, and by understanding the role they play in protecting blue spaces.

Luke Pollard MP has backed the campaign, asking people in south west to make changes to their daily routines when it comes to maintaining water quality. Luke said:

“We are in the middle of a climate and ecological crisis. We need Governments to do more to cut carbon but we can do our bit when holidaying in the UK this summer too. Please follow the Environment Agency’s advice about water safety and keeping our water good quality by not pouring fats down the drains.

 

“We can all do our bit to help address the crisis and keep the south west such a beautiful and amazing place to live, work, play and visit.”

Luke has spoken in the past about the importance of water companies actively contributing to a nature-led green recovery, by encouraging people to cut soaring home water use and helping customers understand exactly how much water they’re using.

Environment Agency Chair Emma Howard Boyd said the following earlier this month:

“Fresh water is the world’s most precious commodity and everyone needs to wake up to the fact that there is less of it to go around. If we continue to operate as usual, by 2050 the amount of water available in England could be reduced by 10 to 15 percent, some rivers could have between 50 and 80 percent less water during the summer and we will not be able to meet the demands of people, industry and agriculture.”

The Environment Agency have published the following tips to help preserve water quality:

•  only flush the 3 Ps – pee, poo, paper
• never pour fats, oils or grease down the sink
• never flush wet wipes and sanitary products down the loo
• always take your rubbish away from the beach
• always bag and bin your dog’s poo
• never pour waste liquids or throw litter down surface water drains
