Luke backs tougher action on Airbnbs

Today, Luke sponsored Labour MP Karen Buck’s bill to create a national register of Airbnbs and holiday lets, to begin to address the spiralling number of these properties in our communities.

Currently, there is no clear register of data on these lettings in England – making it difficult to assess the true scale of the housing crisis.

The bill, officially titled the Short and Holiday-Let Accommodation (Register) Bill, would also give local authorities powers to collect information about these properties.

The pandemic has turbo-charged the housing crisis in the South West, and estimates suggest that the region has the third largest number of Airbnbs per 1,000 residents in the UK.

Luke said:

Every west country family should have a first home, but we are becoming known as a region of second homes and holiday lets. Too many people in our communities are being turfed out of their homes through no-fault evictions, only to find those homes appearing on Airbnb a few days later.

“To shine a light on the true scale of the problem, we need a national register of Airbnbs and holiday lets. But that’s just the start: we also need to raise council tax on these properties and increase supply of social housing. Let’s put first homes first, and second homes second”.

As well as supporting Karen Buck’s bill, Luke has also worked with Cllr Jayne Kirkham, Leader of the Labour Group on Cornwall Council, and Labour Coast and Country, to develop the First Homes not Second Homes campaign, which calls on urgent action to tackle the housing crisis in rural communities.
