Luke has urged the government to fix the failings in the scheme

Luke has criticised the government’s failing Forces Help to Buy scheme, which is helping fewer armed forces personnel and their families than eight years ago.

New statistics show that second stage applications have fallen to their lowest levels since the scheme began, with just 2,810 applications approved in 2021-2022.

First stage applications also fell by more than 3,000 in the last year alone.

The statistics are the latest evidence of ongoing problems with the government’s scheme. Labour has previously highlighted how 2 in 3 applications were being rejected, denying service personnel the dream of home ownership.

Luke Pollard MP, Labour’s Shadow Armed Forces Minister, said:

“Ministers are failing our frontline forces.

“The Forces Help to Buy scheme is now helping fewer forces’ families find a home and these figures are some of the worst on record, with applications falling by thousands in just one year.

“Our Armed Forces deserve better. The Government must fix the failures of the scheme and provide personnel with proper support to secure their own home.”
