Luke's Summer School 2022

Our city is full of bright and hardworking young people, and I want to do everything I can to help them campaign for change. That’s why I’ve held a summer school over the past two days, to help them get their voices heard and make a difference in their communities.

Sessions included ‘bursting the Westminster bubble’, where students heard from my Westminster team about life in Parliament, speechwriting and dealing with the media.

A social media takeover was also held, with students posting their own videos on my Twitter and Instagram pages to hone their digital campaigning skills.

Speakers included representatives from Nudge Community Builders and Keyham Neighbourhood Watch, who made the case to students about the importance of grassroots community work.

Local councillors from Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and the Greens also joined forces in a panel event to answer pupils’ questions on local government.

Running from 4 to 5 August at Devonport High School for Boys, my summer school was open to Year 10 to Year 13 pupils who live, go to school or are homeschooled in the Plymouth Sutton and Devonport constituency.

I’m planning to repeat my summer school on an annual basis to give more young people in Plymouth the chance to take part – so watch this space!

It’s been great to see young people bubbling with ideas as they head out the gates today. I’m sure many will be giving politicians a run for their money before long.
