I want every child in Plymouth to be a reader and to have access to well-stocked libraries in their schools and books they own at home. For me, that is why World Book Day is so important.

I’ve been working with Plymouth Children in Poverty to support schools getting more books and I recently visited Cathedral Primary School to read some of the new books with the children that this scheme provided to each school in the patch I represent.

For this year’s World Book Day it was great to visit classes at Ford Primary and Keyham Barton Primary and read them a story for World Book Day.

It was fantastic to see how excited the pupils are about reading, and to chat with them about their favourite books. Last year we read ‘The Adventures of Scout- Stop Dropping Litter’, where the children learned about stopping plastic pollution and protecting our oceans.

This year we continued reading about Scout’s adventures by reading ‘The Adventures of Scout- The Missing Bees’. The book introduces children to environmental problems including the importance of maintaining habitats for species and planting flowers for bees. You may know I really like bees and this book really hit the spot with amazing illustrations by Ann Baratashvili as well as a great story by the 3 Engineers. Did you know the authors work for Babcock?

Plymouth Children in Poverty are looking for people to help read with children. If you can help get in touch them. Find out more here: https://www.pcip.org.uk/.
