A decision to permanently close Plymouth Studio School today has been signed off by the Government. Funding for Year 10 students who were studying courses not replicated elsewhere in the city has been confirmed by Plymouth City Council and all students have new places or offers for school places.

Commenting on the announcement today, Luke Pollard MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport said:

“The closure of Plymouth Studio School has hurt the educational and life chances of far too many of our city’s young people. The Government’s experimental approach to education, combined with a lack of funding means that far too many of our kids are having their education disrupted and put under threat.”

“Throughout the closure process I have been meeting with and standing up for parents who live in the area I represent that have been affected and I’m pleased that the extra funding myself and Plymouth City Council argued for to give year 10 students the chance to continue studies not available elsewhere in the city has been approved. This won’t make up for the closure of the school, for the disruption and the pain, but it may help a little to support the kids whose courses were not replicated elsewhere.”

“I want to say thanks to the staff and headteacher at Plymouth Studio School who have given their all to support the children. There are some very serious questions that need answering, such as the failure of the Trust to communicate with parents and why Government policy is setting up schools to fail. I will continue to campaign for Plymouth’s children to get fair funding which they are not getting at the moment.”
