Victory for Luke's Charles Church lighting campaign

CharlesChruch-lit1.jpg

Charles Church will be getting a lighting upgrade after the campaign Cllr Chris Penberthy and myself have been running was adopted by the City Council. Charles Church will now get new lights to restore the dignity to the building.

This is great news. Thank you to everyone who has supported the campaign, liked our posts on Facebook, written to Chris and myself with your support or sent your views into the Herald. This has been a hugely positive campaign and one that underlines what can be done when we put our minds to it.

Plymouth has a rich built heritage but far too much of it isn't getting the attention it needs. As well as lighting Charles Church the Labour Council has also announced that Smeaton's Tower is getting a lighting upgrade. This will truly make the lighthouse an attraction day and night and help improve the nighttime economy on the Hoe.

Charles Church is an important building

Charles Church is an important building for Plymouth. It is a war memorial and commemorates all those who lost their lives in the Plymouth Blitz. I would like to see the church celebrated and the sacrifice of the city in the Second World War remembered.

"The campaign to properly light up Charles Church has been hugely popular and well received. When Chris and I started this campaign we wanted to see the church's lighting upgraded in time for VE Day this year. The City Council's decision is great news for all those who want to see our history and heritage protected and preserved.  Luke Pollard"

Cllr Chris Penberthy, Labour Councillor for St Peter and the Waterfront ward, who I've been running the campaign jointly with sent me this comment:

"Luke and I have received so many messages of support for our campaign. We feel there is a real opportunity not only to upgrade the lighting but also to investigate whether proper pedestrian access to the church grounds can be achieved. Charles Church is so important to our city and all those, including myself, who lost family members in the Plymouth Blitz. I'm over the moon that our campaign has been successful."

What do you think?

Let me know what you think about the campaign Cllr Penberthy and myself have been running about Charles Church. Would you like to see proper pedestrian access to the church? What's your view about the new lighting? Get in touch or add your views in the comments below.
