The Secretary of State for the Environment, Michael Gove MP called for 30 per cent of world’s oceans to be protected by 3030.

Less than 10 per cent of the world’s waters are currently protected by the special designation status “Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)”, with 36 per cent of UK waters benefiting from the designation.

Luke Pollard MP has been leading the campaign to create the UK’s first National Marine Park  in Plymouth Sound. Campaigners hope to build a model that can be rolled out on a national scale to further protect Britain’s marine environment.

Speaking for the Opposition and as MP for Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City, Luke said:

“To make commitments to our marine environment real, the government should immediately adopt Labour’s proposals for national marine parks and ensure that all of the world’s oceans are protected from plastics pollution, which is why they must stop turning a blind eye to the mass export of plastics from the UK to countries which allow this material to end up in the sea.”
