Yesterday, Luke stood at the Despatch Box for the first time as the Shadow Environment Secretary to ensure farmers continue to receive their Direct Payments after Brexit. This is important to give farmers stability post-Brexit and ensure they have a fair deal going forward.

The Bill was introduced prior to the onslaught of Bills to come – including new iterations of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment Bills.

These bills will form the backbone for fishing, farming and environmental policy for the next 30 years. They come as our planet is on fire and Luke made the case that they do not go far enough to tackle the Climate Emergency.

Luke also made the case to protect British farmers by ensuring the UK is not subject to lower standards as a result of a bad trade deals negotiated by the Prime Minister in the best interests of Donald Trump.

A Trump deal could undercut British farmers, reduce animal welfare standards, cost British jobs and leave the UK with lower quality food. In the coming weeks and months, Luke will again take to the Despatch Box to lobby the government for the highest environmental, animal welfare and food quality standards in the best interests of the people of Plymouth and the country.
