After reports that sonic weapons will be used against civilians, Luke questioned Defence Minister James Heappey MP on government plans.

In questioning in the Commons, the defence Minister confirmed that the Royal Navy would not use sonic weapons. However, he could not say whether Border Force vessels equipped with sonic weapons would be used against civilians. Luke pressed the Minister to publish the rules of engagement about how these weapons will be used against civilians.

Luke said:

“The announcement that the Royal Navy is taking over Border Force’s role in stopping channel crossings is simply designed to distract attention to save the PM’s job. Our Royal Navy should not be used for political games as part of Downing Street’s Operation Red Meat.

The confirmation that the MOD is taking over command from the Home Office is confirmation that the Home Secretary has failed.”

The Minister says the Royal Navy will not push back small boats and nor will they necessarily deploy any Royal Navy assets. He claimed the Royal Navy vessels sit too high out of the water to enable cross-deck movements.
