Luke’s campaign to tackle the housing crisis in the South West took another step forward today.

For months, Luke has been calling for councils to be given powers to raise council tax on second homes, holiday lets and Airbnbs by up to 400%.

Today the government finally began to listen, promising to bring in a new law to allow local authorities to double council tax on second homes.

Luke said:
“This is welcome but Ministers should not be patting their own backs just yet. Our communities are being hollowed out by second homes, holiday lets and Airbnbs – and we should be able to triple and even quadruple council tax on these properties to reflect the scale of the emergency our region is facing.
“We also need a wider set of measures – including a licencing regime for these properties, as well as a more ambitious plan for building social housing and genuinely affordable homes.
“We’re making progress. But the government must do more to put first homes first and second homes second.”
