Suella Braverman’s attacks on LGBT people sicken me.

Every time a Conservative MP vilifies LGBT people, it fuels attacks on the streets, bullying in the classrooms, untold pain and fear.

At Plymouth Pride a few years ago, I spoke on stage about my worry that, as well as targeting trans people, the Conservatives would soon be targeting the rest of the LGBT family too. Now that’s happening.

In the past few days we have seen the Conservatives drop commitments to banning the cruel conversion therapy. Now we have seen the Home Secretary borrow the language of the far right to attack gay asylum seekers. It won’t stop there.

Rishi Sunak should have sacked Suella Braverman by now, but he won’t. He’s too weak and she is delivering the dog whistle politics of the far right in a desperate attempt to cling to power.

The Government thinks the only way to win the next election is by pitting us against each other, stirring up division. It doesn’t have to be this way…

Labour will ban conversion therapy. Labour will end the small boats scandal by tackling the criminal gangs profiting from human misery in the Channel, and slash the horrendously long backlogs in processing asylum claims. And Labour will support everyone in being themselves regardless of sexuality, sex, gender or other characteristics. That’s the better Britain on offer with Labour. It’s time for a General Election.
