There’s a number of protests planned in Plymouth City Centre today. I support the right of peaceful protest. But let me be equally clear: Plymouth will not tolerate violence or thuggery from anyone.

I utterly condemn the far-right thuggery we have seen this weekend around Britain. Hate has no place on our streets or in our politics.

Be in no doubt: those who have participated in this violence will face the full force of the law. That will equally apply to anyone who causes trouble in Plymouth. I don’t care what your politics, if you participate in violence, looting, attacks and abuse you will be found and face justice.

Plymouth is at our best when we celebrate the diversity of all in our city. Plymouth is a great place to live, work and play and I want it to be fairer, greener and better – that’s what I’m working to do and the platform I was re-elected on a month ago. The way we solve the problems our city is facing is by working together, not seeking to divide our communities with violence and hate.

Let’s work together to have these protests pass peacefully.
