Luke has extended his support for seagrass plantation by encouraging locals to get involved with Cornwall Wildlife’s Trust ‘Seeding Change Together’ project.

The project, funded by Seasalt Cornwall, is all about restoring dwarf seagrass meadows across protected sites in Cornwall from August- September. Cornwall Wildlife Trust started this process last summer and the marine team have tested a variety of methods to identify the most effective way to grow and restore seagrass.

Cornwall Wildlife Trust are providing an exciting volunteering opportunity for locals to engage with projects in their local community and help this great charity reach their ambitious seed collection targets.

Seagrass is a key part of a nature-led approach to capturing carbon. This is something Luke has spoken about many times in the House, advocating for more support for sea grass planting. The Plymouth Sutton and Devonport MP says:

“Sea grass has so much potential. It sequesters 35x more carbon than trees and therefore it is such an effective way to help solve our ecological crisis. Plymouth has incredibly rich marine life and this is a great way to further boost the Tamar’s biodiversity.”

Seagrass can also provide habitats for marine life, help to stabilise the seabed to protect against coastal erosion and clean surrounding seawater.

The proposed dates to visit the sites are listed below but may be subject to change due to the weather and maturation rate of the plant. Volunteers will be kept posted:
