I want to see reform of the House of Lords. That’s why I’m supporting a new measure proposed by the new Labour government to abolish hereditary peers from the House of Lords.
Hereditary Peers are people born into the aristocracy that inherited a landed title. They could be a Lord or an Earl….but they’re not elected. I don’t think an accident of birth should allow you to vote on laws in our Parliament.
The last Labour government managed to remove the vast majority of the hereditary peers but there’s 92 that remain and our proposal is to remove them from the Lords.
If we are to reboot our democracy that was so battered by the behaviour of the last Conservative government we will need to do more than restore trust we will need an overhaul of our democracy.
This measure won’t on its own solve the democratic deficit in the Lords, nor will it fix politics, but it is a step in the right direction. I’m expecting the Conservatives to oppose this policy, but when it comes to the House of Commons I will be voting for it.
