A regular visitor to Plymouth when in opposition, in power as Deputy Prime Minister and afterwards. He backed us, and brought his charm and punchy sense of purpose (and his 1997 pledge card) wherever he went.

Working with the city’s MPs he helped bring down the wall in Devonport returning part of the city walled in behind the naval base wall for decades, creating new homes and jobs in the process.

I’m looking forward to reading and being reminded of his achievements and contribution. He was unique in politics and a big beast of the Labour movement.

I’m thinking of John’s family and friends today with news of his passing.

John Prescott helped change Britain and Plymouth for the better. RIP.
