Luke Pollard MP Labour & Co-op Member of Parliament for Plymouth Sutton & Devonport
I was glad to have the opportunity to visit Lawson House, a probation approved Psychologically Informed Planned Environment Premise (PIPE). Lawson House has been operating in Plymouth since 1974.
Lawson House has an excellent team and facilities, and a strong approach to rehabilitation.
A PIPE works by providing a supportive environment for those transitioning through the criminal justice system. Taking psychological needs into account, Lawson House offers tailored support for residents, many of whom have endured significant trauma, including abuse. It was striking to learn just how many individuals entering PIPE facilities have been victims of abuse, highlighting the need to address these experiences in their rehabilitation.
I want to commend the team at Lawson House for their dedicated and invaluable work. The staff are committed to creating a safe and respectful environment, where individuals are supported, encouraged to reflect on their past experiences, and empowered to develop the skills needed to reintegrate into society. During my visit, it became clear how critical these environments are in addressing the underlying causes of offending behaviour and breaking the cycle of reoffending.
A significant theme in our discussions was the need to improve outcomes for those leaving prison. Stable accommodation emerged as a crucial factor in this process. Without a secure place to live, individuals face enormous challenges in rebuilding their lives and accessing opportunities, such as employment. This highlights the urgent need to provide more housing options for those transitioning out of the criminal justice system. Stable housing is not just a foundation, but a lifeline for those looking to turn their lives around.
Facilities like Lawson House are a testament to how targeted, well-planned support can truly change lives. Through addressing psychological and practical needs of individuals, these environments pave the way for more meaningful rehabilitation and a brighter future.
