Luke Pollard MP Labour & Co-op Member of Parliament for Plymouth Sutton & Devonport
Hello Plymouth – I know that people in our city want, and expect, the rules to be respected and enforced.
Like you, I firmly believe that the government should determine who comes to our country, not vile smuggling gangs in the Channel.
When the Conservatives left office, almost no one who was in the UK illegally faced deportation, not even foreign national criminals.
Labour has begun to clean up the Conservatives’ mess. New figures show that we have removed more than 24,000 people with no right to be in the UK since the election. That’s the highest number in eight years.
This includes thousands and thousands of foreign nationals who have committed crimes in the UK.
But this is not job done.
We must smash the people smuggling gangs at source and compromise their ability to carry out the perilous small boat crossings that put lives at risk.
That’s why Labour is introducing tough new counter terror powers to tear up people-smuggling networks, similar to work to disrupt terrorist networks. These include new powers to disrupt communications, supply chains, and to arrest suspects earlier.
As the PM said today, he was shocked by the lack of co-ordination between the police, Border Force and intelligence agencies in tackling smuggling gangs – something we are now putting right.
Rogue firms in the gig economy who turn a blind eye to illegal working will now also face fines of up to £60,000 per worker for failing to carry out eligibility to work checks.
And today, the Prime Minister has convened a global summit of 40 countries on tackling criminal smuggling gangs to strengthen international cooperation.
Under Labour, the UK is finally beginning to deal with illegal migration and the gangs profiting from small boats misery in the Channel.
