Luke Pollard MP Labour & Co-op Member of Parliament for Plymouth Sutton & Devonport
I’m delighted that Derriford has received confirmation of full government funding for its new A&E department.
Health Minister Karin Smyth has approved the business case for the new A&E at Derriford, keeping it on track to open as planned in 2028.
With @fredthomasmp, I’ve fought hard for a new A&E at Derriford after the Conservatives left its future up in their air.
Boris Johnson’s ‘New Hospitals Programme’ promised 40 new hospitals but was delayed by years and not a single new hospital had been constructed by the time the Conservatives left office. Upon coming into power, Labour found that the funding for the programme was shockingly due to run out in March 2025.
The new Emergency Care Building at Derriford will span four floors, including dedicated areas for children and frail patients, and new state-of-the-art theatres for diagnosis and surgery.
Construction has already started, and the new A&E will open in 2028, followed by the creation of a new children’s emergency facility.
