Contractors have marked the completion of a key milestone in the build of the new city-centre community diagnostics centre with a topping out ceremony. This marks the NHS facility in Plymouth, Luke Pollard MP says it is a “major milestone” for improving healthcare in the city.

Topping out is the traditional moment when the last beam is placed on a new construction and the event marked the end of the upward build of the new diagnostics centre with effort turning to fitting out the project.

The Community Diagnostics Centre in Colin Campbell Court will span three floors and provide access to over 14 types of test, including MRI, CT, Ultrasound, lung cancer screening, audiology, blood tests and X-ray. Once complete, it will provide tens of thousands of tests and scans each year helping to cut waiting lists and get patients treated earlier.

Mr Pollard said the facility is the first step to a ‘health village’ of new NHS services in the city centre which he has campaigned for over six years – improving access to dentistry, GP services, mental health support and sexual health services.

A ceremony today [17 September] marked the official completion of construction work on the Community Diagnostics Centre, with the facility due to open in summer 2026.

The city-centre facility is on main bus routes and easily accessible. It is in St Peter’s & Waterfront ward, which is in the lowest 1% most deprived populations in the country.

Luke Pollard MP, Member of Parliament for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, said:

“The Community Diagnostics Centre is a major milestone to get our NHS in Plymouth back on its feet. It will help folks get seen faster and take the pressure off Derriford.

“For over six years, I’ve campaigned for a new health village of NHS services in Plymouth City Centre. The Community Diagnostics Centre is just the first of many more buildings to come. There’s an exciting future for health on our high street being built in Plymouth.”
