How Plymouth Can Support Ukraine

We’re all concerned by the distressing news and images coming out of Ukraine. We need to see the strongest possible sanctions applied rapidly to the Putin regime to counter the threat to life and European security his invasion poses.

I’ve been proud to see Plymouth step up once again to support people fleeing the war in Ukraine, there have been some fantastic initiatives set up in the community, and we’ve already seen supplies head out from the Southwest for Ukraine and surrounding countries accepting Ukrainian refugees.

I’ve been overwhelmed by the number of messages of people feeling helpless but desperately wanting to help, buying and donating supplies is one thing you can do, but donating money to reputable charities can also help make a difference.

Here are a few different ways to help:

Disasters Emergency Committee:

Give to the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal:

Save the Children Ukraine Appeal:

Oxfam Ukraine Appeal:

Connect with charities who match you with refugees or asylum seekers in need of somewhere to stay. Hosts must be vetted before accepting refugees, so start the process as soon as possible!

Stand in solidarity with refugees by joining the Refugee Council’s calls to increase safe routes for refugees instead of removing them:

A number of vigils, meetings and demonstrations in support of the people in Ukraine are set to be held in the coming days, attend them to show your support. Keep an eye on my social media feeds to stay up to date with those that are happening in Plymouth.

If you’re a British national in Ukraine or have family members that are currently seeking asylum from the conflict there, specific information is available on my website.
