Labour Party Conference is over for another year!

Leaving Liverpool today, I am reflecting on what a brilliant conference it has been for Labour over the past four days. There’s a new confidence in the party and an emboldened determination to win the next General Election and create a better, more positive, fairer and greener Britain.

The highlight was undoubtedly Keir Starmer delivering a passionate, bold and unifying leader’s speech. Keir set out new policies in his speech, such as establishing Great British Energy and strengthening our NHS workforce, that will give Britain its hope and its future back.

Here is a selection of some of the bold policies announced at this year’s conference that I believe will help beat the Tories at the next General Election:

    1. 100% clean power by 2030– A huge national effort, doubling on shore wind capacity, treble solar power, quadruple offshore wind, invest in tidal, hydrogen, nuclear, back carbon capture, commit to green steel production, new renewable ports, and insulate 19 million homes.  Creating more than 8 million new jobs. Training for plumbers, electricians, software designers, technicians. Cheaper bills and higher living standards – clean energy is already cheaper than fossil fuels and nine times cheaper. W just need more of it.
    2. Great British Energy within first year of a Labour Government – The future wealth of this country is in our seas, in our winds and in our skies. Labour’s National Wealth Fund and Great British Energy company will ensure that the British people have a share in that wealth.
    3. Home ownership – Home ownership is the bedrock of aspiration but homes have become less affordable for working people. We will set a new target: 70% home ownership. And we will meet it with a new set of political choices: No more buy to let landlords or second home owners getting in first. We will help new first time buyers on to the ladder with a new mortgage guarantee scheme, reform planning to get shovels in the ground. Labour is the party of home ownership in Britain today.
    4. Deliver for the NHS – Staffing is the main barrier to NHS capacity. Labour will rescue our NHS by taking on an extra 7,500 medical students every year, double the number of district nurses, 5,000 new health visitors and 10,000 extra nursing placements.
    5. Crime. Labour will rebuild policing with a £360m plan for 13,000 more police officers and Police Community Support Officers. That’s 30 – 40 more police and PCSOs in Plymouth.
    6. Rail nationalisation – An incoming Labour government will put passengers back at the heart of our railways, and deliver a better deal for working families and the taxpayer. We will bring rail back into public ownership as contracts expire.
    7. Build Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) in Britain – Labour is backing our Armed Forces by building the new RFA ships in Britain. This will Create 6000 jobs nationally, including design jobs in Devonport.
    8. Economic responsibility – Labour will only borrow to invest when it’s in Britain’s long-term interests. Every policy will be fully costed.

Labour is back. Now is the time to get involved. Bring on the next General Election.
