Responding to the news that Chinese company Huawei is going to be removed from the UK’s telecommunications network, Luke Pollard MP said:
“I voted against Huawei’s involvement in developing the UK’s 5G network in March. The Government whipped its MPs to force through a green light for Huawei then, but now Ministers are doing another screeching u-turn and banning Huawei’s technology from our future 5G networks.
“Plymouth is a city proud of its military connections – we understand why national security matters. We cannot jeopardise our national security by including Huawei in a major infrastructure project in our city like 5G. I will never compromise on national security.
“This latest government U-turn is welcome, but Huawei’s involvement should never have got this far in the first place. While this U-turn further delays Plymouth’s full 5G roll out, I would prefer it was late and secure – rather than on time and vulnerable or compromised.”
