Rail to Refuge - Women's Aid

The Rail Delivery Group have today confirmed that train companies are extending free train travel for those needing to flee domestic violence, until March next year.

Almost 1000 people have used the Rail to Refuge scheme since it was first introduced, with all train companies joining the scheme at the start of the pandemic. It is a joint initiative between rail companies and Women’s Aid in which train operators cover the cost of train tickets for women, men and children escaping domestic abuse and travelling to refuge accommodation.

Luke says:

“No one should face domestic abuse but every year hundreds of people in our city are abused by their partner. The current restrictions around Coronavirus do not prevent you leaving home with your family to escape domestic violence. I am really pleased that the rail companies have extended their scheme providing free travel to those fleeing domestic abuse. In a region where families can be spread out over large distances this is a very welcome move. I do hope that it won’t expire at the new end point of Easter 2021 as it needs to come as standard.

Domestic violence has increased this year and as we approach Christmas I want everyone in Plymouth to know they do not have to accept abuse, they do not have to stay and most importantly, there are people who will believe you, who will keep you safe.”
