We need urgent action on the cliamte emergency

Hello #Plymouth – We need urgent action on the cliamte emergency. Yesterday I went down to the Extinction Rebellion march at Jigsaw Gardens today. As a Shadow Environment Minister, I've spoken about the climate emergency in parliament each and every week when I was an MP. I was one of the first MPs to call for Parliament to declare a climate emergency. The Tories want this election to be about Brexit. But it's about so much more. One of the very most pressing challeneges we face, as city, as a country and as a planet is the climate emergency. The Conservatives have set their target to each Net Zero at 2050. This is far too far in the future. I'll be 70 by the time that happens – but it's our kids who really can't afford to wait. The Tories aren't even on track to hit 2050 yet.I'm supporting Labour's policy of hitting net zero carbon emissions by 2030, as part of our Green Industrial Revolution. But I'd like some sectors to go further than that and hit net zero by 2025, to have carbon headroom to the sectors that will take longer to decarbonise. We'll get rid of diesel and petro engines, retrofitting homes with new green technoligies to lower bills and reduce carbon.Climate justice and social justice must go hand in hand. That's the purpose behind Labour's Green Indsutrial Revoltion. There's a lot at stake in this General Election. I'm standing for re-election on a platform of urgent and swfit action on the climate emergency. Out planet can't wait for the Tories to realise how bad this emergency is. Let me know what you think Plymouth

Luke Pollard showed his support for Extinction Rebellion as they descended on Jigsaw Garden yesterday. Extinction Rebellion are demanding urgent action on the climate emergency we are facing. Global temperatures are breaking records year on year, sea levels are rising to unprecedented levels, species are being lost, and biodiversity is at risk. Addressing the environmental challenges that we face requires a transformational effort from government and urgent interventions now.

Luke Pollard running for re-election as the MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport said:

“Extinction Rebellion have done a fantastic job in raising awareness to the climate emergency we are facing. Climate change is real, and action to avert the consequences of climate change are urgent. As a Shadow Environment Minister, I often took the opportunity to speak about climate change and directly call on the government to take more immediate and meaningful action to protect our planet.

Our planet can’t wait for the Tories to realise the emergency. I’ll be 70 when the Conservatives Net Zero commitments are met. That is not good enough. Labour are pledging to be Net Zero by 2030. I am so proud to stand on a manifesto that is offering transformational solutions to the climate crisis we are facing. ”

Labour will kick-start a Green Industrial Revolution that will create one million jobs in the UK to transform our industry, energy, transport, agriculture and our buildings while restoring nature. The Green New Deal aims to deliver an economy that serves the interests of the many, not the few, where social justice and environmental justice goes hand in hand.
