This weekend Luke visited Falmouth as the first leg in his ‘First Homes, not Second Homes’ tour of communities that have been hit hard by the growth in second homes, holiday lets and Airbnbs.

Luke met with Councillor Jayne Kirkham, the Leader of the Labour Group on Cornwall Council, to discuss how housing in Truro and Falmouth is increasingly out of reach for local people – who are being priced out of the communities where they live and grew up in.

Luke also met local party members to discuss the housing crisis that has been turbo-charged by the pandemic.

Luke said:

“It was great to be in Falmouth with Cllr Jayne Kirkham. Jayne and I have put together the First Homes not Second Homes campaign to ensure that the south west gets our voice heard. As a region we are most affected by the housing crisis and I want Ministers to adopt our proposals.”

Jayne Kirkham, Labour councillor for Falmouth Penwerris ward, said:

“It’s brilliant to have Luke down here because we’ve had a housing issue down in Cornwall for a very long time.

“We have a lot of people buying second homes but not enough first homes, and we need to bring those first homes back into circulation.

“The suggestions that Luke has raised in his ‘First Homes, not Second Homes’ manifesto would really help us here.”
