Luke MP with Trade Union reps from across the City
Luke MP with Trade Union reps from across the City

On Friday 26th January, I was pleased to bring together representatives from the Trade Unions that represent workers from across many sectors in Plymouth, all as part of my regular Politics and Pastries events.

Working people are facing the largest fall in living standards in a generation. It is in this context that we have seen the largest strike disruption in decades. I believe it is deeply worrying that rather than seek practical solutions to these issues, the Government has instead pushed through the Strikes (Minimum Service Levels) Act allowing workers to be sacked for going on strike. I am clear that I oppose this Act and will support efforts to repeal it as soon as the opportunity arises

At the meeting we discussed the realities their members face daily, from workplace violence to fire and rehire practices and more in between. The truth is that without the work of the Trade Union movement, life would likely be even more difficult for workers and their families both in Plymouth and across the country; that is why I am proud to be a Trade Union backed Member of Parliament, and a member of the GMB and Unite the Union.

We have seen an erosion of workers’ rights over the last 14 years, and it has been the trade union movement that has been at the coal face fighting for workplace safety, for terms and conditions and for fair pay.

Thanks to Unite the Union for hosting us today.
