I am deeply concerned that the pollack catch quota change is pushing many fishers into financial distress.

The government knew last June that they would drop the pollack quota to zero, but they haven’t used that six months to consider a plan B for those reliant on pollack catches.

Such big changes to quotas might be able to be absorbed by big fishing companies, but many Plymouth fishers in our U10 fleet have been dealt a serious economic blow.

Any adjustments to quotas must be communicated clearly to affected fishers, who also must be supported through these changes with an alternative plan. This has not been the case and the financial damage to fishers has been both predictable and preventable.
