Plymouth City Council have been notified by the military that the operation has been a success and the World War II bomb has been removed. They are now starting to remove the cordon so people who have been evacuated can return to their homes.

I want to pay tribute to the extraordinary team effort that has taken place this week by Plymouth City Council staff, local councillors, agencies, hundreds of volunteers, staff at the Life Centre, the police, the military, bomb disposal teams and others, who have worked together tirelessly to keep residents safe, looked after and well-informed during this period.

I saw first-hand at the Life Centre today the generosity and care people have shown one another and I’m proud that Plymouth has truly shown the best of itself this week.

Lastly, I want to thank the affected residents of Keyham who as a community have had to put up with an incredible amount of disruption and concern this week.

The community has been through an awful lot in recent years and the experience of the past few days will have brought back painful memories of the tragic shooting that took place in August 2021. As people return to their homes this evening, we must remember to continue supporting the Keyham community in the weeks that follow.

Thank you.
